Athlos Put Keely Hodgkinson In A Superhero Suit, And It Worked

Keely Hodgkinson won the 800m at Athlos London wearing a black hooded speedsuit that made her look more like a Marvel character than a middle-distance runner. She pulled away over the final 200 meters to win in 1:56.40, more than two seconds clear of the field, at a sold-out StoneX Stadium on September 18.

That's not how track meets usually look. That's the point.

Athlos, the women's-only league founded by Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, just ran its first event outside the United States, and it went about as well as an experiment can go. Total prize money for the 2026 season nearly tripled to $2.1 million, up from $773,500 the year before. Winners took home $65,000 each, with money paid down to sixth place, plus a $250,000 bonus on offer for anyone who broke a world record.

Nobody broke a record on a chilly 17-degree night in north London. Nobody needed to.

Marileidy Paulino delivered the performance of the evening, running down Norway's Henriette Jæger in a 400m that came down to the final straight, winning in a meeting record 48.73 seconds. It was the 15th time in her career she's broken 49 seconds, tying the all-time record for that mark. Sha'Carri Richardson took the 100m in 10.80. Gabby Thomas won the 200m.

No Qualifying Rounds, No Ribbon Medals

There were no qualifying rounds. Six athletes, straight finals, seven events total, done in one night. Athletes made individual entrance walkouts. The long jump happened on a raised stage next to the track instead of a corner of the infield. Winners got custom Tiffany & Co. crowns instead of a medal on a ribbon.

Hodgkinson sounded genuinely into it. "I would have loved to have had (an event like this) when I was younger," she said. "This is fun. Life is supposed to be about enjoying it." She'd finished second to Switzerland's Audrey Werro at the World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest just a week earlier, competing through a hamstring tear picked up at the European Championships in Birmingham.

Richardson framed the London expansion as bigger than one meet. "It is going to continue to grow and the world is watching," she said after her win.

The Bet Behind The Spectacle

That's what Ohanian is actually testing here. Track and field has world-class athletes and almost none of the presentation infrastructure other sports take for granted. Athlos is checking whether adding that infrastructure, walkouts, real prize money, a stage built for spectacle, actually changes how many people show up and watch, rather than just making existing fans happier.

Early signs say yes. Both New York editions have sold out their 5,000-seat venue. London sold out too, even at a mid-sized 10,500-seat rugby ground that gave the league room to grow into rather than shrink from on its first try outside the U.S. Ticket prices ranged from £25 near the start line to £85 near the finish, with a reduced £10 rate for children, pricing that suggests the league wants families in the building, not just hardcore fans.

Athletics has spent decades treating its biggest stars like interchangeable parts of a Diamond League calendar nobody outside the sport can name off the top of their head. Athlos is betting that treating six of them like main-event fighters, with the money and staging to match, beats another anonymous Tuesday meet in a half-empty European stadium. One night in London suggests that bet is paying off.
