## Mario Balotelli discusses retirement, Roberto Mancini and the Italian national team Mario Balotelli finds peace after a turbulent career and speaks openly about the crisis in Italian football Mario Balotelli can now reflect more calmly on a career in which immense talent, trophies and spectacular moments were accompanied by controversy, poor decisions and numerous missed opportunities. Now 36, the Italian striker plays for Al-Ittifaq in the United Arab Emirates, where he is trying to enjoy football and fulfil a childhood dream. The former Italy international plays alongside his brother, Enock Barwuah. Away from Europe’s biggest stadiums, Balotelli continues to follow developments in Italian football and has spoken about the reasons behind the decline of the Azzurri. In his view, one of the main problems is that children no longer play football every day in the streets and parks. ## Money was not the main reason behind the move Mario Balotelli signed a two-and-a-half-year contract with Al-Ittifaq in January 2026. He made his decision quickly after meeting the club’s president and discussing the sporting project. The striker insists that the financial offer was not the decisive factor. The opportunity to continue playing in a competitive league and share a dressing room with his brother weighed more heavily in his decision. “To be honest, it was an idea that came about more or less at the last minute,” he says. “The president wanted to meet us, and we talked. I was interested in the project. Everyone always says, ‘You’re going to Dubai for the money,’ but, thank God, I’m not short of money. So money wasn’t the only objective. The project was actually appealing and competitive. I started to like the idea and decided to give it a try.” Adapting to football in the Middle East has provided Balotelli with good training facilities and modern stadiums. However, the experience differs from his spells in Italy and England, particularly because of the low attendances and certain organisational issues. “In terms of infrastructure, things are very good. The stadiums are beautiful. The problem is the crowd: the stands are empty, which is a little sad,” he says. “The organisation also leaves a little to be desired, but I think things will improve over time. I’m talking about every team here, without exception.” ## A childhood dream fulfilled alongside Enock Barwuah Beyond the sporting project, the transfer also had an important personal dimension. Mario Balotelli and Enock Barwuah had promised each other as children that they would one day play together. The different paths taken by their professional careers appeared to make that dream impossible. Mario played for major clubs such as Inter Milan, AC Milan and Manchester City, while Enock built his career at a lower level. Nevertheless, the two brothers continued to hope that, towards the end of Mario’s career, a club would offer them this opportunity. “It’s wonderful. Ever since we were children, we always said that one day we would play together. He kept asking me, ‘If you play for Inter, AC Milan or Manchester City, how could I possibly play alongside you?’ I told him that, when I got older, I might join a team at a slightly lower level and perhaps we would be given that opportunity. It was always a dream, and now it is becoming a reality.” ## Balotelli explains the decline of Italian football Despite being far from home, the striker continues to follow the problems affecting Italian football closely. Italy have failed to qualify for three consecutive World Cups, an almost unimaginable decline for a national team with four world titles. Balotelli believes the explanations should not be found solely in tactics, training methods or the quality of the coaches. In his opinion, the changes that have taken place in Italian society and the way children now spend their free time have directly affected the development of new generations of players. “In my opinion, the problems are very simple,” he says. “I prefer to offer practical explanations rather than technical ones, based on everyday life and what I see in Italy. “When we were children, we played football for hours. I remember my mother getting angry with me because I stayed outside until it was so dark that we could no longer see the ball. Our parents threatened not to let us go outside and play the following day. Now, when I walk around cities such as Brescia — although I have noticed the same thing in other Italian cities — the parks are empty. There is nobody there anymore.” ## The streets and parks produced the footballers of the past Balotelli remembers that organised training sessions represented only one part of the development of children who were passionate about football. After finishing their sessions with their clubs, they continued playing for hours in parks, courtyards or on the streets. Matches played without coaches or a fixed schedule helped them develop their creativity, technique and ability to make quick decisions. The most talented children were invited to play alongside older players, forcing them to cope with a faster pace and greater physical demands. The striker believes that mobile phones, computers and gaming consoles have profoundly changed this reality. Many children today become familiar with the skills of the world’s greatest footballers by watching videos online, but they no longer spend enough time on the pitch to reproduce them. Balotelli continues: “Computers, mobile phones and PlayStation consoles have ruined many things. Above all, parents’ attitudes have changed. Nowadays, a seven-year-old child might play football for two hours once every three days. We had the same organised training sessions, but we also played for three hours in the park every day. It was fun for us, but in reality, it was additional training. “I truly believe that talent was developed in the streets and parks. You played a lot, learned a lot and tested yourself against older children. If you were good, they did not let you play with children your own age; they made you play alongside the older ones. Those tests helped me greatly in the long term. Playing alongside people older than me was always one of the most important experiences of my career. “Nowadays, children spend their time on their phones. They think they are Ronaldinho because they watch videos of him. I thought I was Ronaldo because I could actually perform the same skills in the park. There is a huge difference.” ## Italy can return to the elite of world football Despite the difficult period endured by the Azzurri, Balotelli does not believe the decline will be permanent. The former international points out that other major European nations have also experienced crises before rebuilding their systems and returning to contention for trophies. The effects of any reforms will not be seen immediately. Italy may need two or three generations to make up the ground they have lost and begin producing players capable of competing at the highest level again. “Yes, I believe future generations will be able to turn the situation around,” he predicts. “Perhaps it will not happen immediately, but in two or three generations. It is normal for a country to go through periods of decline, but then it recovers. Spain, France and Germany have all experienced similar periods.” ## Roberto Mancini sent him a birthday message Mario Balotelli made 36 appearances and scored 14 goals for Italy. His last appearance for the national team came on 7 September 2018, when the Azzurri faced Poland in Bologna. The match also had special significance for Roberto Mancini, as it was the first competitive game of his first spell as Italy manager. Their relationship goes beyond their time together with the national team. Mancini also coached Balotelli at Inter Milan and later at Manchester City, becoming one of the most important managers of the striker’s career. Following Mancini’s return as Italy manager, Balotelli revealed that the coach had sent him a message on his birthday. The striker responded jokingly, reminding his former manager that his playing career was not yet over. “He sent me a message to wish me a happy birthday, and I joked with him and said, ‘You know I can still play!’” Balotelli reveals. “I am very happy that he has returned to the national team. I care about him a lot and wish him all the best. In Italy, people tend to blame coaches far too often, but honestly, the system should bear a greater share of the blame. That is the truth nobody wants to acknowledge.” Balotelli does not rule out a surprise return to the national team. Everything will depend on his performances and the number of goals he scores for Al-Ittifaq. “If I keep scoring, yes,” he replies firmly. ## Manchester City holds a special place in his career The three years Mario Balotelli spent at Manchester City remain one of the most important periods of his career. The Italian won the Premier League and the FA Cup under Roberto Mancini, helping to launch the club’s transformation into a major force in European football. Balotelli joined City at a time when the English club did not yet possess its current prestige or dominance. Helping to build the team that won the league title after such a long wait remains a source of particular satisfaction for him. “It remains one of the best memories of my career,” Balotelli says. “At that time, City were not as well known as they are today. We joined the team that took the first steps towards making City what they are now. That gives you a special feeling. In fact, it means much more than that.” ## Balotelli is not thinking about retirement yet The striker is recovering from a minor leg injury but continues to train. The high temperatures in the United Arab Emirates make training more challenging and force him to manage his energy carefully. Balotelli has not set a date for his retirement. He intends to continue playing for as long as his body allows him to and as long as he still experiences the same joy whenever he steps onto the pitch. “I feel good,” he says. “I’m recovering from a minor problem with one of my legs, but I’m training and things are going well. It is extremely hot, which makes it a little more difficult to give 100%, but if you manage your energy and play intelligently, you can cope quite well. Nevertheless, the heat is undoubtedly a disadvantage. “On the pitch, I want to continue playing for as long as I feel good. Football is what I love doing, so I will carry on until my body tells me, ‘Enough.’ Away from the pitch, once my career is over, I definitely want to focus on my business interests and my children. However, I would like some peace and quiet. I have had a very turbulent career, so a more settled lifestyle would not be bad at all.” ## The advice he would give his 16-year-old self His experiences have led Balotelli to view many episodes from his past differently. If he could return to his teenage years, he would advise his younger self to avoid certain mistakes and pay more attention to those who tried to guide him. “I would tell him not to make certain decisions and to listen to certain people at the right moments.” ## Who Is Mario Balotelli? ## Ranking Every €117m-Plus Transfer from the Biggest Flop to the Best Investment Bradley Barcola is on the verge of leaving Paris Saint-Germain for Liverpool and becoming one of the most expensive footballers in history. If his move to Anfield is completed, the French international will become only the 16th player to command a fee equivalent to at least €117 million. However, an extraordinary price tag has not always guaranteed success. Some of the players signed for such enormous sums have justified the investment with trophies, goals and memorable performances, while others have proved deeply disappointing. Excluding the 2026 transfers involving Elliot Anderson, Yan Diomande and Morgan Rogers, here is our ranking of the major transfers worth more than €117 million before add-ons. ## 12. Eden Hazard – €117m – Chelsea to Real Madrid Eden Hazard enjoyed the perfect environment in which to showcase his qualities at Chelsea. The Belgian was given freedom on the pitch, enjoyed the club’s complete support and became a firm favourite with the Stamford Bridge crowd. His unpredictability and ability to decide matches single-handedly made him one of the most exciting players in the Premier League. His transfer to Real Madrid was supposed to represent the crowning move of his career, but it turned into a resounding failure. Hazard struggled to cope with the enormous demands of the Spanish club and was continually hampered by injuries and fitness problems. The player who had shone so brightly at Chelsea was rarely seen in a Real Madrid shirt. His influence on the team was minimal, and his performances never came close to justifying the amount invested by the Spanish giants. ## 11. João Félix – €132m – Benfica to Atlético Madrid Atlético Madrid do not usually spend at the same level as rivals Barcelona and Real Madrid, but the club made a spectacular exception in the summer of 2019. Following Antoine Griezmann’s departure for Barcelona, Atlético paid the equivalent of approximately €132 million for João Félix, who was regarded as one of Europe’s most promising forwards. The Portuguese forward was only 19 when he left Benfica, and the size of the transfer fee created enormous expectations. João Félix was expected to become the new attacking star of Diego Simeone’s side, but his playing style did not always fit the Argentine coach’s demanding system. João Félix scored 34 goals in 131 appearances for Atlético Madrid, a modest return for a player signed for such an extraordinary fee. He later had spells with Chelsea and Barcelona without establishing himself permanently at either club. At the age of just 26, the former Benfica prodigy is already playing in Saudi Arabia. His career demonstrates how quickly a spectacular transfer can turn into a failed investment. ## 10. Philippe Coutinho – €123m – Liverpool to Barcelona Philippe Coutinho was one of the world’s finest attacking midfielders during his time at Liverpool. The Brazilian combined technique, imagination and efficiency with the ability to score spectacular goals and create opportunities for his team-mates. Barcelona had attempted to sign him during the summer of 2017 but did not complete the deal until January 2018. The Catalan club paid the equivalent of approximately €123 million, although problems emerged before Coutinho had even made his debut. A thigh injury was detected during his medical and kept him out for around three weeks. Coutinho won the league title in his first season at Barcelona and scored seven goals in 18 La Liga appearances. Those figures were not disastrous, but the Brazilian never reached the level he had displayed at Liverpool. He managed only five goals in 34 league appearances during the following campaign, prompting Barcelona to send him on loan to Bayern Munich in 2019. The situation became particularly humiliating for the Catalans when Coutinho scored against them in Bayern’s remarkable 8-2 Champions League victory. The German club went on to win the competition at the end of that season. After a brief return to Barcelona under Ronald Koeman, Coutinho joined Aston Villa on loan in January 2022. The English club made the move permanent that summer for the equivalent of approximately €20 million, almost €103 million less than Barcelona had paid for him. ## 9. Antoine Griezmann – €125m – Atlético Madrid to Barcelona Antoine Griezmann had developed into one of the world’s leading forwards following his spells with Real Sociedad and Atlético Madrid. The Frenchman was the main attacking star of Diego Simeone’s team and appeared ready to take another significant step in his career. However, his relationship with Barcelona supporters had already been damaged before the transfer took place. In the 2018 documentary “The Decision”, Griezmann kept viewers waiting for almost an hour before announcing that he would remain at Atlético Madrid. He changed his mind a year later and accepted Barcelona’s offer. The Frenchman faced a major tactical obstacle after arriving at the Catalan club. The areas in which he felt most comfortable were already occupied by Lionel Messi, the undisputed leader of the team. Griezmann was forced to adjust his game and could no longer exert the same influence on attacking moves. His spell at Barcelona cannot be described as a complete disaster, but it did not justify an investment of approximately €125 million. Griezmann returned to Atlético Madrid in 2021 and gradually rediscovered the role that suited him best. ## 8. Florian Wirtz – €117m – Bayer Leverkusen to Liverpool Florian Wirtz’s first season at Liverpool unfolded in difficult circumstances, making it difficult to reach a definitive verdict on the transfer. The German arrived at Anfield after establishing himself as one of Europe’s most highly rated attacking midfielders with Bayer Leverkusen. His talent is beyond doubt, but the size of Liverpool’s investment also brought an obligation to influence matches consistently. A player purchased for approximately €117 million cannot afford to make a decisive contribution only occasionally. Wirtz’s performances became less convincing as the season progressed. The German enjoyed a slightly better spell in midwinter, but it was not enough to remove the doubts surrounding him. The midfielder still has time to prove that he can adapt to the intensity of the Premier League. Until then, the jury remains out on his transfer. ## 7. Alexander Isak – €146m – Newcastle United to Liverpool Alexander Isak ranks above Florian Wirtz because of his previous Premier League experience and the impressive form he had shown at Newcastle United. However, his first season at Liverpool was seriously disrupted by fitness problems. The Swedish striker scored only three league goals before an injury suffered ahead of Christmas brought his campaign to a premature end. Such a limited goal return is deeply disappointing for a forward purchased for approximately €146 million. Isak must become far more efficient because his contribution to other areas of the game cannot compensate for prolonged periods without scoring. His experience in English football and the qualities he demonstrated at Newcastle provide reasons to believe he can recover. Liverpool will nevertheless expect performances worthy of one of the largest investments in the club’s history. ## 6. Jack Grealish – €117m – Aston Villa to Manchester City Jack Grealish joined Manchester City in 2021 after becoming one of the most imaginative and entertaining players in the Premier League. At Aston Villa, he was given the freedom to lead attacks, carry the ball and make decisions without being restricted by too many tactical responsibilities. The situation changed under Pep Guardiola. The Spanish coach asked him to follow a far more disciplined system in which every movement and position had a specific purpose. Grealish struggled to adapt his natural playing style to those demands. The Englishman made an important contribution during the season in which Manchester City completed the treble by winning the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League. Even so, his overall influence has not fully justified an investment of approximately €117 million. His playing time subsequently became more limited, and the footballer who had dominated matches for Aston Villa was seen less frequently at his brilliant best. ## 5. Enzo Fernández – €125m – Benfica to Chelsea Enzo Fernández has not entirely justified the amount paid by Chelsea, but he cannot be considered an outright transfer failure either. The Argentine arrived from Benfica after winning the World Cup and needed time to adjust to a team undergoing constant change. The midfielder became one of Chelsea’s leading creative forces. His passing quality, vision and ability to contribute to the build-up earned him an important role, while some of his goals proved decisive in difficult matches. Nevertheless, his performances have not always matched the expectations surrounding a player purchased for approximately €125 million. Enzo Fernández has demonstrated that he can become essential to Chelsea, but he must reach a higher level of consistency to justify his price tag fully. ## 4. Neymar – €234m – Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain Neymar’s transfer to Paris Saint-Germain divided modern football into two distinct eras. Until the summer of 2017, a release clause equivalent to approximately €234 million appeared impossible for any club to trigger. PSG permanently changed the rules of the transfer market. Barcelona had included the figure in the Brazilian’s contract because the club believed no team would ever be capable of paying it. The Parisian hierarchy activated the clause, and Neymar accepted the move to France in an attempt to escape Lionel Messi’s shadow and become the leader of a project built around him. His statistics in Paris were impressive. Neymar scored 118 goals in 173 appearances and won five Ligue 1 titles. Viewed in isolation, those achievements could make the transfer appear successful. However, PSG did not sign him simply to continue dominating French football. The principal objective was to win the Champions League, a trophy Neymar was unable to deliver at the Parc des Princes. His best attempt came in 2020, when PSG reached the final before losing to Bayern Munich. Neymar had already left the French club by the time the Parisians eventually succeeded in winning European football’s biggest prize. ## 3. Moisés Caicedo – €117m – Brighton to Chelsea Moisés Caicedo’s Chelsea career began disastrously. The Ecuadorian conceded a penalty in the final minute of his debut, immediately increasing the pressure created by his enormous transfer fee. Caicedo had appeared close to joining Liverpool, but Chelsea won the battle for his signature and paid the equivalent of approximately €117 million. Following that difficult start, the midfielder gradually adapted and became one of the London club’s most important players. The Ecuador international featured in every league match played by Chelsea during the previous season. His ball-winning ability, energy and tactical discipline made him indispensable. Versatility is another important part of his game. Enzo Maresca has even deployed him at right-back without significantly reducing his effectiveness. At only 23, Caicedo has every opportunity to improve further and turn Chelsea’s enormous expenditure into a justified investment. ## 2. Kylian Mbappé – €194m – AS Monaco to Paris Saint-Germain Paris Saint-Germain could not accept the prospect of the greatest French talent of his generation joining a major club outside the country. Kylian Mbappé had burst onto the scene at AS Monaco and become one of the most sought-after young stars in European football. The Parisians paid the equivalent of approximately €194 million to bring him to the Parc des Princes. During his years with PSG, Mbappé developed from an exciting prospect into a global superstar. The forward scored 256 goals in 308 appearances, won seven league titles and was named Ligue 1 Player of the Year on five occasions. His individual performances justified the transfer fee, even though the Champions League remained beyond his reach. Mbappé continued to cost PSG an enormous amount even after his transfer had been completed. In 2022, amid interest from Real Madrid and the risk of losing him on a free transfer, PSG offered him a new contract worth the equivalent of approximately €1.17 million per week. The agreement merely postponed his departure. The French striker eventually moved to Real Madrid, but his first season away from Paris produced an unexpected irony. It was PSG, not the team from the Santiago Bernabéu, who lifted European football’s greatest trophy. ## 1. Declan Rice – €123m – West Ham United to Arsenal Describing a player purchased for approximately €123 million as a bargain might sound excessive. However, Declan Rice has turned an enormous investment into an inspired piece of business for Arsenal. The English midfielder quickly became one of the leaders of the team at the Emirates Stadium. ## From Dortmund to Linz, the nights Celtic would rather forget The humiliation against LASK immediately took its place among the darkest nights in Celtic’s history. The Glasgow side travelled to Austria with a commanding advantage but suffered a 5-1 defeat and missed out on a place in the Champions League league phase. The result in Linz added another chapter to a surprisingly long list of European disasters endured by the Scottish club in the 21st century. Although Celtic can look back on a remarkable continental history, the contrast between their former glory and some of their more recent performances could hardly be greater. European champions in 1967 and European Cup finalists again three years later, Celtic also reached the 2003 UEFA Cup final, where they lost to José Mourinho’s Porto. Since 2000, however, the Scottish giants have suffered several inexplicable eliminations, some against opponents with considerably fewer resources and much less European pedigree. ## 7th place – Borussia Dortmund 7-1 Celtic in 2024 Celtic have suffered several heavy defeats against Europe’s leading clubs, but the night in Dortmund stands apart. Instead, they demonstrate how his strengths can complement the qualities of United’s other midfielders. Tielemans could assume greater responsibility for progressing the ball through his distribution, allowing Baleba to concentrate on shielding the defence, recovering possession and carrying the ball through central areas. In a partnership with Kobbie Mainoo, Baleba could cover more ground and take on most of the ball-winning responsibilities. If paired with Santos, the Cameroon international could be given greater freedom to move between the two penalty areas and become more involved in attacks. His positioning last season also highlighted his tactical flexibility. Baleba played 88 per cent of his minutes as a defensive midfielder and the remaining 12 per cent in a central midfield role. He can protect the area in front of the defence but is also capable of moving forward whenever the profile of his midfield partner allows him to do so. ## Well suited to Michael Carrick’s system Manchester United most commonly defended in a 4-2-2-2 formation last season. That shape accounted for 55.9 per cent of the team’s defensive structures when they were out of possession. In such a system, the two central midfielders must cover large areas, close passing lanes and stop counter-attacks before they can develop. Baleba’s mobility and speed could make him an important component of Carrick’s defensive structure. The Cameroon international is comfortable in open matches featuring plenty of space and frequent changes of possession. United, however, are attempting to control games for longer periods and advance through short passing combinations in central areas. Baleba will therefore need to adapt to taking on greater responsibility during the build-up phase. His left foot and mobility could make him a suitable partner for Tielemans or Bruno Fernandes. At 22, the former Brighton player still has plenty of time to refine his passing and improve his decision-making in possession. At his best, Baleba combines defensive aggression, acceleration and ball-carrying ability. He can regain possession inside his own half and help launch a dangerous attack at the opposite end within seconds. Steven Gerrard holds the record with eight selections in the team chosen by the Professional Footballers’ Association. At the opposite end of the spectrum are several huge names who shone in the Premier League, won major trophies and delivered outstanding individual performances, yet never received this particular recognition. The list features English champions, Golden Boot winners and even a Ballon d’Or recipient. From Mesut Özil and Claude Makélélé to Gianfranco Zola, Luka Modrić and Robbie Fowler, the following ten players were never selected for the PFA Team of the Year during their time in English football. ## 10. Mesut Özil, an elite creator overlooked in his finest season Mesut Özil was one of the most inventive midfielders to represent Arsenal during the Premier League era. The German could unlock an entire defence with a single pass and was the London club’s main creative force for several seasons. The Portuguese defender quickly adapted to English football and formed one of the most effective centre-back partnerships in Premier League history with John Terry. Terry was named in the PFA Team of the Year on four occasions, but Carvalho never received the same recognition. The Portuguese international stood out for his anticipation, pace, composure and ability to make timely interventions without losing his position. His most difficult omission to understand came in the 2005-06 season. Chelsea won the title after conceding only 22 goals, but John Terry and Jamie Carragher occupied the two central defensive positions in the PFA line-up. His runs from deep, excellent timing and ability to arrive in goalscoring positions made him a constant threat to opposing defences. His finest individual campaign arguably came in 2001-02. Ljungberg played a major part in Arsenal’s title triumph, scoring several important goals during the decisive stage of the season. Nevertheless, Robert Pirès and Ryan Giggs were preferred in the wide midfield positions. The Swede remained one of the defining figures of Arsenal’s golden era, even though his performances were never rewarded with a place in the PFA Team of the Year. ## 6. Claude Makélélé, the footballer who had a position named after him Very few players have influenced a tactical role so profoundly that the position itself eventually became associated with their name. Claude Makélélé achieved exactly that at Chelsea, where he redefined the defensive midfield role in English football. The Frenchman protected the back line, regained possession and maintained the balance of a team built to dominate. His work did not always produce eye-catching statistics, but it allowed Chelsea’s attacking players to perform with greater freedom. Competition for midfield places was extremely strong during the 2000s. Even so, Makélélé’s complete absence from the PFA selections remains difficult to justify. He was one of Chelsea’s most important players during the period in which the London club emerged as a dominant force. N’Golo Kanté, widely regarded as his successor in the Premier League, was named in the PFA Team of the Year twice. Makélélé, the player who transformed how the role was viewed, was never selected. ## 5. Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, a two-time Golden Boot winner who was never selected Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink won the Premier League Golden Boot on two occasions, but neither achievement earned him a place in the PFA Team of the Year. It remains one of the most surprising omissions in the history of the annual selection. The Dutch striker combined physical strength and clinical finishing with an exceptionally powerful shot. He scored consistently for both Leeds United and Chelsea, becoming one of the most prolific foreign forwards in English top-flight history. Luka Modrić, the future Ballon d’Or winner who was overlooked If the players were ranked solely on the strength of their entire careers, Luka Modrić could easily occupy first place. The same logic could work at Fiorentina, where the objective is qualification for European competition. Atalanta also remain strong contenders for the leading positions. They are accustomed to competing in Europe, but their managerial change requires a significant tactical adjustment. The transition from the aggressive style and relentless pressing associated with Gian Piero Gasperini to Maurizio Sarri’s possession-based style built around quick passing combinations cannot happen overnight. Results will depend on how quickly the players adapt to their new tactical demands. ## Udinese, Torino, Genoa and Lazio could influence the standings Udinese appear well equipped for a relatively comfortable season thanks to the combination of physical strength and technical ability within their squad. The figures were published in the "Football 50 2026" report compiled by consultancy firm Brand Finance. ## The world’s leading club brands reach a record value The football industry is experiencing an unprecedented period of commercial expansion. The world’s 50 most valuable club brands are collectively worth €23.9 billion, representing the largest annual increase since the ranking was launched 15 years ago. Financial power is concentrated primarily among the clubs at the top of the ranking. The ten leading clubs have a combined value of €14.9 billion, accounting for almost two-thirds of the total brand value calculated for all 50 clubs. These figures underline the growing economic influence of clubs that combine major sporting achievements with global fan bases and extensive international commercial partnerships. ## Real Madrid also leads the brand strength ranking Real Madrid does not lead the standings solely in terms of financial value. The Madrid-based club is also the strongest football brand in the world, earning a score of 95.8 out of 100. None of the other 280 clubs included in the analysis achieved a higher rating. Brand Finance attributes this position to the club’s international reputation, remarkable history, enormous supporter base and squad featuring players recognised around the world. Another major factor is the ability of the club’s management to transform sporting success and decades of prestige into lucrative commercial agreements. Real Madrid also benefits from exceptional global visibility. The club’s popularity extends far beyond Spain, allowing it to attract powerful sponsors, generate substantial revenue and continue expanding its commercial influence. ## FC Barcelona closes in on the €2 billion mark FC Barcelona remains the closest challenger to its great rival from Madrid. The Catalan club’s brand value has risen by 15%, taking it close to €2 billion. Brand Finance partly attributes Barcelona’s progress to its return to Spotify Camp Nou after more than two years away. The reopening of the stadium has improved the club’s commercial prospects and strengthened its relationship with supporters. Winning two consecutive LaLiga titles has also played an important role. Sporting success, international exposure and the return to its home ground have helped the Catalan club reinforce its position among the world’s most influential sporting organisations. ## Arsenal records the most spectacular rise The gap between Spain’s two giants and their leading challengers remains considerable. Arsenal recorded the biggest rise among the clubs near the top of the ranking, climbing five places to third. The London club’s brand is valued at €1.5 billion following an increase of 28%. Its progress was driven by winning the Premier League for the first time in 22 years, as well as qualifying for the Champions League final. Bayern Munich sits fourth, with a value of approximately €1.5 billion following annual growth of 21%. Paris Saint-Germain retains fifth place. Manchester City, Liverpool and Manchester United occupy the next three positions. Chelsea and Borussia Dortmund complete the top ten most valuable club brands in world football. ## Atlético Madrid and Real Betis make significant progress Spain’s influence in the ranking extends beyond Real Madrid and FC Barcelona. Atlético Madrid has climbed to 11th place worldwide after increasing its brand value by 22%. Real Betis recorded growth of 14% and rose five positions to 33rd. This rise highlights the Seville club’s commercial development and its growing international visibility. Three other Spanish teams also feature among the top 50. Athletic Bilbao occupies 39th place, Villarreal CF sits 45th, while Real Sociedad completes the ranking in 50th position. ## LaLiga continues to trail the Premier League Among domestic competitions, LaLiga ranks as the second most valuable domestic league brand in world football. The Premier League holds first place, supported by huge commercial revenues and highly valuable broadcasting agreements. The Spanish championship remains ahead of the Bundesliga, Serie A and Ligue 1. The presence of clubs such as Real Madrid and FC Barcelona gives it considerable international exposure, although the gap to the Premier League remains visible. Brand Finance representatives believe that one of the main challenges facing Spanish football is turning the worldwide popularity of its two biggest clubs into an advantage for the entire competition. This would involve increasing the value of the other teams and strengthening LaLiga’s international image. Hosting the 2030 World Cup could contribute to this process. The tournament will be staged primarily in Spain, Portugal and Morocco, with commemorative matches also scheduled to take place in Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay. ## Real Madrid finished second in LaLiga From a sporting perspective, Real Madrid ended the 2025/26 season in second place in the Spanish championship. "Los Blancos" collected 86 points, eight behind champions FC Barcelona, who finished the campaign with 94 points. Real Madrid recorded 27 victories, five draws and six defeats over 38 matches. ## Djed Spence has signed for Inter Milan, with Tottenham receiving approximately €35 million Djed Spence is officially a new Inter Milan player. Tottenham have also secured a 10 per cent sell-on clause. ## Inter Chose Spence to Replace Denzel Dumfries Djed Spence was signed to fill the void left by Denzel Dumfries, who joined Real Madrid. The Italian champions were looking for an attack-minded right-back capable of supporting the forward line and covering the entire flank.
