Every transfer window brings drawn-out negotiations, unexpected twists and promises that rarely materialise quickly. This summer has been no exception, despite numerous clubs attempting to complete their main deals before the World Cup.

Some transfers were finalised discreetly and caught the media completely by surprise, while others developed into never-ending dramas. Bradley Barcola, Savinho, Marcus Rashford, Julián Álvarez and Enzo Fernández are at the centre of five sagas that remain unresolved as the transfer deadline approaches.

Bradley Barcola and the Huge Gap Between Liverpool and PSG

During the opening weeks of the summer, Yan Diomande appeared destined to become the central figure in a prolonged transfer saga. Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain hesitated to submit a decisive offer, allowing Real Madrid to make the move that neither club was prepared to make.

Once Diomande was no longer available, Liverpool turned their attention to Bradley Barcola. The PSG winger quickly emerged as the English champions’ leading attacking target, but approximately seven weeks have passed without any apparent progress in negotiations.

The main obstacle is the considerable difference between the two clubs’ valuations. Liverpool want the France international but consider PSG’s financial demands excessive. The Parisian club are reportedly asking for no less than £145 million, a figure that can partly be explained by Barcola’s importance and the current state of the market but remains extremely difficult to justify.

Liverpool must have received some encouragement to continue pursuing the deal for so long. Barcola has reportedly already agreed personal terms, while his salary would not represent a major obstacle. His current earnings would not even place him among the ten highest-paid players at Anfield.

For the transfer to happen, PSG must lower their demands, Liverpool must increase their offer or both clubs will have to accept a significant compromise. With the deadline drawing closer, time is no longer on their side.

Tottenham Continue to Push for Savinho

Savinho’s situation is difficult to understand from the outside. Manchester City are refusing the opportunity to make a substantial profit, while Tottenham continue to wait despite reportedly offering more than twice the amount City paid for the Brazilian two years ago.

Enzo Maresca wants time to assess his entire squad before making a definitive decision. The new manager has several natural wingers at his disposal, including Savinho, Jérémy Doku, Antoine Semenyo, Jack Grealish and Jeremy Monga. Despite having so many options, City appear convinced that only two of those players can currently be relied upon.

Savinho endured a difficult season, something that can happen to a young footballer during his second year at a club of this level. The Brazilian made only 14 starts across all competitions and recorded seven goal contributions, figures that make Tottenham’s reported £60 million offer appear particularly generous.

Subsequent reports have suggested that the London club significantly improved their offer. Even that was not enough to convince Manchester City to approve the player’s departure.

The English champions may fear that Savinho could thrive at Tottenham and make them regret selling him to a direct rival. However, the Brazilian would probably receive a far more important role at Spurs than the one currently available to him at the Etihad Stadium.

If Maresca cannot guarantee him sufficient playing time and a role that reflects his talent, selling him may be the most logical solution. Tottenham are prepared to invest heavily, while City would still have time to use the money to find a suitable replacement.

Marcus Rashford and the Break-Up That Refuses to Happen

Barcelona have a habit of turning negotiations into complicated dramas, and their interest in Marcus Rashford appeared ready to produce one of the summer’s longest transfer sagas. This time, however, the Catalan club clarified their intentions relatively quickly.

Barcelona abandoned the possibility of signing the Manchester United forward and instead chose to invest almost three times as much in Anthony Gordon. Rashford’s proposed move to the Camp Nou therefore became impossible, but his situation at Old Trafford remains unresolved.

A reconciliation between Manchester United and the England international has been presented as a realistic possibility. Continuing their relationship, however, would resemble a marriage of convenience born out of a lack of attractive offers.

Manchester United want to remove their highest-paid player from the wage bill. Rashford also wants a change of scenery, having last played for his boyhood club 20 months ago.

A departure remains the most likely outcome. United’s financial demands are not unreasonable when compared with the sums being spent during the current transfer window. The problem is finding a club capable of paying the transfer fee and covering the forward’s salary.

United may have to accept the possibility of Rashford joining a rival and reviving his career elsewhere. That could be the necessary price for ending a relationship that no longer appears to satisfy either the club or the player.

Julián Álvarez, Caught Between Atlético Madrid and Barcelona

Barcelona’s decision to abandon their pursuit of Marcus Rashford may be connected to their strong interest in Julián Álvarez. Even before the end of last season, it had become clear that the Argentine striker’s future would produce one of the summer’s most dramatic stories.

Atlético Madrid had already lost patience by the end of May. The club posted images on social media showing Lamine Yamal, Raphinha and Pedri wearing Atlético shirts. It was a response to what Atlético regarded as a campaign designed to unsettle Álvarez and drive down his market value.

Real Madrid also helped intensify the story. During his re-election campaign, Florentino Pérez promised to submit a €150 million offer for a major player.

It later emerged that Álvarez was the footballer in question and that the offer had never been intended to succeed. The move was reportedly intended to complicate Barcelona’s attempt to sign the Argentina international.

Álvarez travelled to the World Cup hoping he would return to Spain as a Barcelona player. However, the Catalan club never came close to meeting Atlético Madrid’s £130 million asking price. It is an enormous figure, but one that reflects both the striker’s quality and his importance to Atlético’s plans.

The saga reached another tense stage when Álvarez was required to return to Atlético training. The Spanish media turned the moment into a major spectacle, even though the striker remained under contract and was naturally expected to report for pre-season preparations.

Barcelona do not appear prepared to meet Atlético’s demands, and Álvarez now appears to be having second thoughts about how the saga has unfolded. According to reports, the forward apologised to his teammates after publicly expressing his desire to move to the Camp Nou.

Wanting to join Barcelona was not necessarily his biggest mistake. Álvarez appears to have placed too much faith in the Catalan club’s ability to turn their interest into an acceptable offer.

Arsenal are closely monitoring the situation and remain in the background. Like Barcelona, the Gunners admire Álvarez, but they have yet to demonstrate that they are prepared to submit an offer capable of changing Atlético Madrid’s position.

Enzo Fernández and a Possible Reunion With Enzo Maresca

The Enzo Fernández transfer saga has only truly gathered momentum over the past two weeks. The World Cup and managerial changes at Chelsea and several interested clubs have delayed the start of serious negotiations.

Real Madrid do not appear interested in the Argentine, even though a move to the Santiago Bernabéu would reportedly appeal to him. Manchester City have therefore emerged as the main option should he leave Stamford Bridge.

Signs of Fernández’s dissatisfaction had already appeared when he faced an angry reaction from Chelsea supporters during the match at Brighton. Although the London club’s situation looks more promising following Xabi Alonso’s appointment, the midfielder could still attempt to secure a transfer.

Enzo Maresca, his former Chelsea manager, has taken charge of Manchester City and was immediately linked with several of his former players. Enzo Fernández is reportedly at the top of that list.
