Major surprises in the European Golden Shoe standings as Scottish talent climbs to joint 2nd

Harry Kane, Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland have won the last 3 editions of the European Golden Shoe and are once again among the leading contenders for the award in 2026-27. However, the early September standings are not dominated by Europe’s biggest stars.

Raphinha, Donyell Malen, Kylian Mbappé and Lamine Yamal have all made prolific starts to the new campaign and already feature among the top scorers in Europe’s 5 major leagues. For now, none of them are close to the summit.

The leading positions are occupied by players from leagues that began much earlier in the calendar year. Among them is Robbie Ure, the young Scottish striker signed by Sevilla following his excellent performances in Sweden.

How the European Golden Shoe points system works

The European Golden Shoe standings are not determined exclusively by the number of goals scored. The value of each goal depends on the league’s position in UEFA’s coefficient rankings over the preceding 5 seasons.

Goals scored in Europe’s top 5 leagues are multiplied by 2. Competitions ranked between 6th and 22nd have a coefficient of 1.5, while goals scored in leagues ranked below 22nd are worth 1 point each.

As a result, a striker playing in Latvia, Estonia or Iceland needs to score considerably more goals to match the points total of a player competing in the Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga, Serie A or Ligue 1.

The order will probably change as the major European leagues progress, but the current standings have provided an opportunity for several lesser-known players to step into the spotlight.

10. Bubacarr Tambedou – 15.5 points

Bubacarr Tambedou has accumulated 15.5 points after scoring 15 league goals for 2 different clubs. The Gambian striker began his campaign at FCI Levadia, where he scored 14 goals in the Estonian top tier.

Each of those goals was worth 1 point. Tambedou subsequently joined Sønderjyske and has already scored his first Danish Superliga goal, adding another 1.5 points to his total.

9. Amin Chiakha – 16.5 points

Amin Chiakha is beginning to establish himself as an exciting name in Scandinavian football. The 20-year-old forward was born and raised in Copenhagen and represented Denmark at 3 age-group levels before choosing to represent Algeria at senior level. He has made 3 appearances for the African nation.

Chiakha won the Danish league and cup double with his boyhood club in 2024-25, although he played only a minor role in that successful campaign. His decisive breakthrough came after joining Rosenborg on loan.

The striker scored 11 goals in 19 Eliteserien appearances in 2026. Those performances convinced the Norwegian club to complete a permanent transfer for him.

8. Josué Vergara – 17 points

Josué Vergara is one of the young players likely to attract interest from major European clubs in the near future. The Panamanian striker moved to Europe at the beginning of 2026 and needed only a few months to earn a transfer to a stronger league.

4. Isak Bjerkebo – 19.5 points

The Glasgow-born striker developed in Rangers’ academy before making his name at Sirius. His performances in Sweden convinced Sevilla to pay approximately €6.5 million to sign him in August 2026.

His departure represents a major loss for Sirius, but the move has given Ure the chance to continue his rapid development in La Liga.
