Enzo Fernández Ranks Only 22nd Among the Premier League’s Most Expensive Inflation-Adjusted Transfers

Enzo Fernández made Manchester City history after completing a transfer worth approximately €145.8 million. The Argentine midfielder became the most expensive signing in the club’s history and equalled the British football transfer record, but the true scale of the deal looks very different when football inflation is taken into account.

According to calculations made by football finance expert Kieran Maguire, the fee paid for Fernández places him only 22nd among the most expensive transfers completed by Premier League clubs. In this ranking, historic deals are adjusted based on revenue growth in the English top flight.

All figures in this article have been converted into euros at a rounded exchange rate of €1.166 per £1, close to the reference rate published by the European Central Bank on September 1, 2026.

Transfer Fees Have Risen Dramatically

Premier League clubs now generate revenues that would have been almost unimaginable 3 decades ago, and their transfer budgets have grown at a similar rate. As a result, it has become increasingly difficult to determine whether the amount paid for a player represents a smart investment or excessive spending.

The €145.8 million fee paid by Manchester City for Enzo Fernández has generated plenty of debate. However, transfers costing almost €117 million less produced a similar reaction 30 years ago, when clubs operated with considerably smaller revenues.

Comparing players and transfer fees from different generations has always been complicated. A footballer’s value is influenced by the era in which he plays, the financial strength of the clubs involved, broadcasting income and the overall state of the market. To provide a more realistic comparison, Kieran Maguire created a model that updates historic fees in line with football-specific inflation.

How the Ranking Was Compiled

Kieran Maguire’s method takes into account the combined revenues of Premier League clubs and uses the 3 largest transfer fees paid during each season in the competition’s history as reference points.

The British football finance expert acknowledges that the system cannot produce perfect results, but it allows meaningful comparisons to be made between vastly different eras. Football inflation has risen much faster than inflation in the wider economy, particularly due to the enormous sums generated through broadcasting rights and commercial agreements.

The results significantly alter the ranking based solely on the fees paid at the time of each transfer. Although Enzo Fernández’s transfer, worth approximately €145.8 million, ranks 2nd in British football in nominal terms, it drops to 22nd place once inflation is taken into account.

Alan Shearer Remains the Clear Leader

First place belongs to Alan Shearer, who joined Newcastle United from Blackburn Rovers in 1996 for the equivalent of €17.5 million. The transfer set a world record at the time, although such a fee would now be enough to sign only an average player.

When measured against the financial strength of clubs during that period, Newcastle United’s investment would now be worth approximately €276.2 million. The difference between that figure and the inflation-adjusted value of Enzo Fernández’s transfer exceeds €130 million.

Shearer proved to be one of the most successful signings in the history of English football. The striker spent 10 years with Newcastle United, became the club’s all-time leading goalscorer and still holds the record for the most goals scored in Premier League history.

His previous transfer also occupies a notable position in the ranking. Blackburn Rovers signed him in 1992 for the equivalent of €3.8 million, a fee that would now be worth approximately €135.8 million. The adjusted value is slightly higher than the €135.3 million paid by Manchester City for Elliot Anderson in 2026.

Recent Transfers Are Already Worth More

The model demonstrates just how quickly the transfer market changes. Jack Grealish joined Manchester City in 2021 for the equivalent of €116.6 million, but that amount would be worth €154.7 million in 2026. In just 5 years, football inflation has added more than €38 million to the value of the deal.

Alexander Isak, who joined Liverpool in 2025 for the equivalent of €145.8 million, occupies 15th place with an adjusted value of €154.6 million. Florian Wirtz, also signed by Liverpool in 2025, ranks 24th, with his €135.3 million fee carrying an inflation-adjusted value of €143.5 million.

Transfers completed in 2026 are not altered by Kieran Maguire’s model because they are already expressed in present-day terms. Enzo Fernández therefore remains at approximately €145.8 million, Morgan Rogers at €136.4 million and Elliot Anderson at €135.3 million.

Manchester United Dominate the Top of the Ranking

Manchester United account for 5 of the top 10 entries, mainly thanks to transfers completed during the late 1990s and early 2000s. Rio Ferdinand, Juan Sebastián Verón, Andy Cole, Dwight Yorke and Paul Pogba all occupy prominent positions in the ranking.

Rio Ferdinand’s transfer from Leeds United to Manchester United was completed in 2002 for the equivalent of €38.8 million. Adjusted for football inflation, that deal would now be worth approximately €231.5 million. The former England defender occupies 2nd place and is ranked behind only Alan Shearer.

Manchester United are also represented near the top by Juan Sebastián Verón, who was signed in 2001 for the equivalent of €32.8 million. The adjusted value of that transfer is €208.1 million. Andy Cole, Dwight Yorke and Paul Pogba complete the club’s group of 5 entries inside the top 10.
