Polo Season in Dubai: Six Cool Months and One 20-Goal Final
Polo season in Dubai runs from late October to late April, when the heat finally lets the horses work. The biggest tournaments, the Silver Cup and the Gold Cup, land in January and February, and the 2026 Gold Cup final on 14 February was a 20-goal match that Dubai Wolves won 11-8 over UAE Polo Team.
A 20-goal team is not twenty goals scored. It is a handicap, the combined rating of four players, and it is how polo lets a patron who rates at zero play alongside a nine-goal professional. If you have never heard it explained, this guide to polo handicaps does the maths.
What 20 goals actually means
Every polo player carries a handicap, rated from minus two up to 10 in steps of one goal. A team plays four riders, so a 20-goal side is four players whose ratings add up to 20, say four fives, or a pair of eights and a pair of twos. The rating describes ability, not goals scored, and 10 is the top of the scale. Very few players ever reach it.
In handicap matches the gap between two teams' ratings can be handed to the weaker side as a head start, which is how a mixed team of amateurs and professionals still makes a proper game of it. At the Gold Cup, 20 goals is the top tier of Dubai's series.
When the season actually runs
For most of the year Dubai's polo fields are quiet, which is what happens when you schedule horse sports through a Dubai summer. At Al Habtoor Polo Resort & Club, the 2025-26 season opened with the Ladies Charity Cup on 25 October 2025 and finished on 25 April 2026. The 2026-27 season follows the same pattern, and the clubs confirm each cup's dates closer to the time.
The opening weeks are the warm-up. The high-goal tournaments are packed into the new year, and the Dubai Polo Gold Cup Series, which started in 2009 with 10 to 12 goal tournaments, now runs up to 20 goals at the top end. This is how the 2026 series looked:
- Silver Cup (18 to 20 goals): 10 to 24 January
- Gold Cup (20 goals): late January to 14 February
- Dubai Challenge Cup (8 to 10 goals): 7 to 14 March
- Polo Masters Cup (6 to 8 goals): 4 to 11 April
- Dubai Cup (6 to 8 goals): 13 to 18 April
The Gold Cup Series is not the only circuit. Dubai Polo & Equestrian Club in Arabian Ranches runs its own calendar, including the Emaar Polo Cup, which Bin Drai won in its February 2026 final.
The calendar works like a hill. It opens in October with charity and warm-up fixtures, climbs to the 18 to 20 goal tournaments in January and February, then comes back down through the 8 to 10 goal Challenge Cup in March to the 6 to 8 goal cups in April.
If you are new to the sport, the lower-goal cups in March and April are the gentler place to start. The ratings are lower, the games are easier to follow, and the heat has barely started to creep back.
Where to watch it if you can't be there
Most Dubai polo is watched in person, at Al Habtoor and at Dubai Polo & Equestrian Club. For anyone elsewhere that weekend, the options have been thin.
Polo is a hard game to follow cold. There are four riders a side, a ball moving at speed and a rulebook built around the line the ball travels. Matches are split into periods called chukkas, around seven minutes each, and players change ponies between them, so a rider can get through several horses in one match.
That is changing. Buzzer signed a partnership with Dubai Polo & Equestrian Club in February 2026 to livestream its competitions, starting with the Emaar Polo Cup final, and Polo Al Taco already streams weekly on Buzzer Arena TV. New to the sport, start with how polo works, from chukkas to fouls.
The Silver Cup opens the high-goal season in January. By then the cooler weather will have been around long enough for everyone to forget August.
