Can Pakistan Hockey Rise Again in 2026? Problems, Solutions & The Digital Revolution

I still remember what my dad used to tell me.
“When Pakistan’s hockey team walked onto the field, the other team’s morale was already down.”

1984, Los Angeles. We won the Olympic Gold.
4 World Cups. 3 Olympic Golds.
Back then, the world feared the name "Pakistan Hockey".

And today in 2026?
We can’t even qualify for the Olympics. We’re ranked 18th in the FIH world rankings.
The national game of Pakistan… and our players don’t even have proper Astroturf to practice on.

Why am I writing this?
Because I truly believe 2026 can be our comeback year.
But only if we break the old system and take the new digital path.

In this article I’m sharing my research, my thoughts, and some hard truths.

Section 1: The Golden Era When We Were Kings

*Let’s go back in time for a bit.

My school PT teacher used to say, “Beta, no one in the world can dribble like Shahbaz Junior.”
When I watch the 1994 World Cup final on YouTube, I understand why he said that.

1982 to 1994… we call this Hockey’s Golden Era.
In those 12 years we won 2 World Cups 1982, 1994 and 1 Olympic Gold 1984.
Add 1960 and 1968 Olympic Golds before that, and you see the legacy.

Hassan Sardar, Shahbaz Ahmed, Kaleemullah, Mansoor Ahmed… these weren’t just players.
They were emotions. When they stepped on the field, it felt like victory was already ours.

Back then you could buy a hockey stick for 5 rupees in any neighborhood.
Every school had a mud ground. People would fix the TV antenna on the roof just to watch matches.
Sponsors would line up at the PHF office.

But the biggest thing was our style. “Asian Style Hockey”
Fast, skill-based, artistic hockey. Europeans played with power. We played with brains.

Then after 2000, everything changed. Astroturf came, rules changed, and we got left behind.

The real question is: Why did we fall behind? Let’s look at that next.*

Section 2: The 5 Real Reasons We Fell

1. Money & Sponsorship Crisis*
I checked PHF’s reports. In 2025, PHF’s total budget was around 150 million PKR.
Meanwhile, Hockey India makes over 1 billion PKR from just one league.

Why aren’t brands coming? Because matches aren’t on TV.
And matches aren’t on TV because there are no brands. It’s a vicious cycle.
Our players don’t get money for kits, diet, or foreign tours.
So how can they practice and compete?

1. Destroyed Infrastructure
   Pakistan has only 6-7 international standard Astroturfs. And they’re only in Lahore, Karachi, Islamabad.
   Cities like Jhang, Multan, Sialkot don’t have a single turf.
   Without turf, you can’t play modern hockey.

India built 2 turfs in every state after 2010.
Result: They have 5000+ registered players. We barely have 500.

1. Management & Politics
   This is the most painful part. PHF has changed presidents 8 times in the last 10 years.
   Every new person cancels the previous person’s work.
   Selection is based on references, not talent. Groupism.
   One player told me on condition of anonymity: “On the ground, references matter more than performance.”

2. Left Behind in the Digital Age
   What did India do? They created the Hockey India League. Live on Star Sports. Highlights on YouTube.
   Players build fan followings on Instagram. Brands pay them directly.

Us? We don’t even have a proper official YouTube channel.
Today’s kids are on TikTok. They can’t even find a 10-second hockey clip.

1. Brain Drain - Players Left the Country
   3-4 of our best players are now playing in European and Malaysian leagues.
   That’s not bad, but they can’t play for Pakistan.
   Why? Because PHF doesn’t give them NOCs or they don’t get facilities here.
   We’re sending our own diamonds abroad.*

Section 3: The 2026 Roadmap - How We Rise Again

*Enough crying. Let’s talk solutions.
I truly believe if we do these 5 things in 2026, we can qualify for the 2028 Olympics.

1. Digital Sponsorship Model - Every Pakistani Can Be a Sponsor
   Look how PSL worked. Even small brands bought teams.
   We can start an “Adopt a Player” campaign.

I’m a freelancer. I can sponsor one junior player with 5000 PKR a month.
You can too. If 1000 people give 5000, that’s 5 million PKR a month.
For this, PHF needs to build one app. Transparent. Where every rupee is accounted for.

1. Pakistan Hockey League - PHL
   Not a copy of PSL, but we can learn from it. 6 teams. Lahore Lions, Karachi Kings style.
   3-month league. If each franchise sells for 100 million, PHF gets 600 million.
   That money goes straight to grassroots.

Most important: All matches must be FREE to watch on YouTube + Facebook.
If a kid watches on his phone, interest will be born.

1. Social Media Revolution
   Every player needs an Instagram and TikTok account.
   Post 1 minute of training daily. “Stick Handling with the Captain”.
   Let fans know what the player eats, how he practices.

When people know players personally, they’ll come to watch matches.
Indian players have 1 million followers. Our captain doesn’t even have 20k.
That’s the difference.

1. Government + Private Partnership
   Government can’t do it alone. Private companies need to step in.
   Tell every big company: “Sponsor your city’s team.”
   In return, give them tax discounts.

Make “Inter-School Hockey Tournament” mandatory every year.
Give scholarships to winners.

1. Grassroots Academies - 1 Turf in Every District
   This is the longest job but the most important.
   Government should build 1 Astroturf in every district.
   Cost: 80-100 million. Make a 5-year plan.
   With each turf, add 1 coach and 100 kids.
   In 3 years we’ll have 500 new players.
   Talent exists in Pakistan. We just need to polish it.*

Section 4: What Can We, The Common People, Do?

*Now you’re probably thinking “What can we do? We’re just common people.”

Let me tell you. We can do a lot.

1. Support: When the next match happens, go to the stadium. If you can’t, watch on YouTube.
   Even views count as support.
2. Raise your voice: Tweet #BringBackHockey. Tag PHF on Facebook.
3. Create content: You have a camera on your phone. Make videos of your local club. Interview a player.
   That’s what I’m doing by writing this article.
4. Donate: Even 100 PKR matters. Send it to any academy. Small amounts make a difference.
5. Motivate kids: Buy a hockey stick for your younger brother. Let him play hockey along with cricket.

Remember. The 1992 World Cup team won because the nation supported them.
A team can’t win alone. When the nation stands together, victory is certain.*
