After years of ban, our teams are back. This is the face of new Pakistan football.

When I saw this photo for the first time, I got goosebumps.

For the first time in years, Pakistan had 22 players wearing green with pride.

I still remember the first time I saw kids playing football in Lyari, Karachi. Barefoot. One ball. 20 players. No referee. But the passion? Unreal.

That’s Pakistan football for you.

For 75 years we’ve lived in cricket’s shadow. Ask anyone on the street about sports and they’ll talk Babar Azam, Shaheen Afridi, World Cup 1992. But mention football and people go quiet. "Wo to goraon ka khel hai" - that’s what my uncle told me last year.

But 2023 changed something.

When FIFA lifted the ban on PFF after 15 months, I saw posts everywhere. Young boys in Peshawar, girls in Lahore, even my cousin in Dubai started sharing Pakistan team updates. For the first time, it felt like we had a chance.

So let’s talk real. No sugarcoating. Can Pakistan qualify for the FIFA World Cup 2030?

Today, August 2026, we’re ranked 201 in the world. We haven’t played an AFC Asian Cup match in our lives. But Iceland qualified in 2016 with a population of 3 lakh. Morocco beat Belgium, Spain, and Portugal in 2022.

If they can, why not us?

In this article I’m breaking down the ugly truth, the real problems, and also why I haven’t lost hope yet.

Part 1: Where Do We Stand Right Now?

Let’s be honest. We’re at rock bottom.

I checked last week - Pakistan is 201 in FIFA rankings. Below Afghanistan. Below Nepal. That hurts.

The Pakistan Premier League? Dead since the FIFA ban. Right now players in WAPDA, KRL, and Army play 2 tournaments a year and that’s it. No salary. No contracts. My friend’s brother plays for a club in Faisalabad - he works at a shop in the morning and trains at night.

Internationally? We got knocked out of 2026 World Cup qualifiers in round 1. Conceded 9 goals to Saudi Arabia.

But there are 2 things giving me hope.

First: The women. I watched Pakistan vs India in SAFF Women’s 2024 on YouTube. 40,000 views. Girls from Islamabad United FC are getting trials. This never happened before.

Second: Overseas Pakistanis. Easah Suliman. He played for Aston Villa. He chose Pakistan. Abdullah Iqbal plays in League One. These guys grew up in England academies. If we get 10 more like them, our team changes overnight.

So we’re bad. But we’re not banned anymore. And we have fans who actually care now.

Part 2: The 5 Walls Blocking Us

If we want 2030, we need to break these 5 walls:

Wall #1: Paisa

PSB gives football 8 crore a year. PCB gets 800 crore. You can’t build a World Cup team on 8 crore. PFF has zero sponsors. No TV channel will show our matches because "rating nahi aayegi". Without money, no foreign coach, no training camps abroad.

Wall #2: League hi nahi hai

Beta, Brazil, Japan, even Bangladesh have professional leagues. Our boys play 12 matches a year. In Europe, they play 50. How will they improve? We need PPL back with 10 teams, minimum salary 1 lakh per month, and live streaming on YouTube.

Wall #3: Match hi nahi khelte

India played 22 internationals in 2025. We played 6. You can’t learn swimming without water. PFF needs to book Nepal, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan every 2 months. Even if we lose, we learn.

Wall #4: Grounds aur Coaches

Go to any ground in Jhang, Multan, Quetta. Kacha ground. No grass. No floodlights. And we have only 14 AFC A-License coaches in the whole country. India has 400+. We need 10 academies with foreign coaches in 4 years.

Wall #5: Log dekhte hi nahi

Last time PTV showed a Pakistan football match? I don’t remember. Kids watch Premier League at 1am but don’t know Pakistan has a team. We need TikTok, YouTube, influencers. Make football cool again.

Part 3: 5 Reasons I Still Have Hope

Despite all this, here’s why I’m not giving up:

Reason 1: UK wale bhai

1.2 million Pakistanis in UK. Hundreds play in academies. If PFF office just picks up the phone and calls them, our starting XI becomes 10x better. Easah is proof.

Reason 2: Gen Z

My 14 year old cousin knows Haaland’s goal stats but not cricket stats. This generation watches football daily. They play eFootball. The talent is there, we just need to find it.

Reason 3: PFF is moving

Since 2023 elections happened. Dues cleared. They promised a league in 2027. Let’s see. But at least someone is sitting in the office now.

Reason 4: Girls are coming

In Lahore Grammar School, they have a girls football team. In Karachi, Diya WFC is training 200 girls. In 10 years these girls will be our national team.

Reason 5: Private log aa rahe hain

A businessman in Lahore opened an academy with a Spanish coach. They pay players 50k/month. 5 years ago this was a joke. Now it’s real.

Part 4: 2030 Tak Ka Roadmap

World Cup 2030 is in Spain, Portugal, Morocco. 48 teams. Asia gets 9 spots.

Here’s the only way:

2026-2027: PPL starts. 15 friendlies. Ranking below 180.

2027-2028: Qualify for Asian Cup 2027. Even if we lose all 3 games.

2028-2029: Beat India in SAFF. Reach final.

2029-2030: World Cup qualifiers Round 3. Need to finish top 4 in Asia.

Is it possible? 5% chance.

But if we don’t try now, 2034 and 2038 will also be 5%.

Final Words

So can Pakistan qualify for 2030?

My answer: Probably not.

But my second answer: What if we do?

Japan in 1993 had nothing. Now they beat Germany.

Vietnam was ranked 170 in 2017. Now they’re top 100.

It starts with one decision. One league. One sponsor. One TV deal.

I’m not asking for World Cup trophy. I’m asking for a team we can be proud of. A team where a kid from Chaman can say "I want to play for Pakistan" and actually have a path.

2030 is 4 years away. That’s 1460 days.

If PFF, government, and us fans do our part, we won’t qualify in 2030. But we’ll be ready for 2034.
